Enzymatic Action Competition Between Omega 3 and Omega 6

2 comments:

  1. Facts:
    1. Omega-3 and Omega-6 compete for enzyme to get broken down in the body. Therefore, they have competition.
    2. The ideal balance of Omega-6 and Omega-3 is 2:1, and the maximum is 4:1.
    3. Omega-3 is anti-inflammatory, omega-3 is pro-inflammatory
    Questions:
    1. What's the mechanism of Omega-6 damaging nerves?
    2. How do Omega-6 decrease the conversion of Omega-3 by occupying the enzyme? Although the concenration changes the amount of Omega-3 remains. Is there a chemical equilibrium in this process?

  2. Lauren, Your slides are blurry, but I'm not sure why. When we do this again, do a test run and see if you can correct that. You have some great diagrams that I think would be even more useful if I could see all the details.

    Some areas to elaborate on:
    - Is there an effect if the individual has more enzymatic activity than another person?
    - Is there a specific reason why omega 6s accelerate free radical formation?
    - Should we find out more information about the clotting effects of omega 3s?
    - Good idea for future research: Maybe you can find more about ROS and RNS (which would link with the free radical comment I made earlier).

    Overall, a job well done.
