Title: Omega-3 fatty acids may aid heart attack healing
Author: Reuters Health Group
Summary: It has been proven that Omega-3 fatty acids aids fighting against inflammation. A more recent study suggests additional benefits that a higher concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids might help heal heart attacks and possibly prevent death. There was two experiments conducted on the heart attack patients. The first experiment wasn't a 100% successful to be able make proper conclusions since not all patients found beneficial results. The second experiment used more concentration (additional doses) than the first with positive results on the patients and their heart conditions. The patients' hearts began with fibrosis and scans showed the heart was pumping normally and the fibrosis was decreasing afterwards. This demonstrates that stronger concentrations of Omega-3 have a higher chance of helping aid heart attacks. Therefore, the pill supplements are better than eating fish, but fish will still provide you with sufficient Omega-3 as a more cost friendly alternative right now.
I find it very interesting that omega-3 fatty acids can help with the heart, because as I learned from Charlie's article and my article, they help the brain recover from injuries and help to maintain proper eye health as well. I know that omega-3 fatty acids can help in the brain because they help make up the membrane of the brain cells, but I wonder from a biological standpoint how they help in the heart and in the eye. I do find it pretty interesting as well that insurance does not currently cover high-dose fish oil prescriptions for heart attack patients, I wonder if that will change soon?
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't look like there are any negative side effects to taking fish oil, as opposed to pharmaceutical drugs. The fish oil seems to play a duel role in reducing inflammation and reducing scar tissue, while also making the heart pump more effectively.
ReplyDeletePrescription dosage of fish oil. I wonder if they've looked at the side effects, long term, of using fish oil in this quantity. You know, the saying "too much of a good thing". Again, I'd like to read more about the actual mechanism by which omega-3s are able to be this "miracle drug" that can heal heart attack damage.
